AI Images vs Stock Footage: When to Use Which

Neither one is simply 'better' — they solve different problems. Here is how to tell, scene by scene, which one you actually need.

Short answer: use stock when the real thing exists and looks right; use AI images when it does not, or when a specific style matters more than photographic accuracy. Most channels need both, scene by scene, not one or the other for an entire video.

What stock is actually good at

Stock photo and video libraries are enormous, free through Pexels and Pixabay, and — critically — real. A shot of a genuine cityscape, a real crowd, real weather, real hands typing on a real keyboard reads as authentic in a way a generated image sometimes does not, however good the model is. For anything grounded in the present, ordinary and literal, stock is usually the faster and more convincing choice.

Stock has a well-known weakness too: everyone else making faceless content is drawing from the same libraries. A handful of clips — the same city drone shot, the same stock "businessman thinking" photo — turn up across dozens of unrelated channels. Viewers who watch a lot of this content recognize them.

What AI images are actually good at

AI generation earns its place in exactly the situations stock cannot cover: a historical scene with no surviving footage, a specific fictional or hypothetical moment, a stylized look (photorealistic, cinematic, anime, oil painting and dozens more — all applied automatically at generation time), or simply a shot specific enough that no stock photographer happened to take it.

The trade-off is that AI images are not free the way stock is. Vid Optimus itself charges nothing per image, but generation calls the provider and model you picked with your own API key, and that provider bills you for what you generate — a real cost, worth understanding before a long run (see what it really costs with your own keys).

A scene-by-scene way to decide

  • Does the real thing exist and does it look like what the script describes? Use stock.
  • Is the scene historical, fictional, hypothetical, or otherwise unphotographable? Use an AI image.
  • Does the shot need a specific visual style — anime, cyberpunk, oil painting — rather than photographic realism? Use an AI image; style is applied at generation time, so the same prompt can be restyled without regenerating it from scratch.
  • Is a face or figure meant to recur across the video? Use an AI image with consistent characters turned on — stock cannot give you the same "actor" twice.
  • Not sure? Let AI Director decide. It mixes sources across the script and chooses per scene rather than committing the whole project to one.

Mixing them in one project

None of this is an either/or setting for the whole video. Vid Optimus lets a source be chosen per scene, or per shot inside a scene when a scene is cut into several — a documentary segment might open on real archival-style stock, cut to an AI-generated recreation for a moment nothing was filmed, then return to stock for the present-day interview shot. AI Director can make exactly this kind of decision automatically if you turn it on; otherwise it is a manual choice per scene, same as everything else on the timeline.

The practical rule of thumb

Reach for stock first for anything ordinary, present-day and literal. Reach for AI images the moment the scene needs something that does not exist to be filmed, or a specific look the footage cannot give you. Most scripts end up using both, and that is the point — a single-source video usually looks like it, one way or the other.

Quick answers

Can I mix AI images and stock in the same video?

Yes — the choice is made per scene, or even per shot within a scene, not once for the whole project.

Which is cheaper?

Stock photos and video are free through Vid Optimus. AI images depend on the provider and model you choose — see the per-image pricing in each model's catalogue entry before a long run.
